MY MAGAZINE-
Tuesday 11 May 2010
After deciding that the picture above will be the main image for our magazine we worked on the typography. Through previous research, we already know that most horror magazine are aimed at male audiences this is shown through the typography, text, slogans and choice of colour and colour schemes. e.g. renowned magazine below- The colour scheme for this magazine is black and red both of these colours relate to horror BLACK being the colour of darkness and RED being the colour of blood make a coalition that subliminally makes this magazine effective.
with what we know we were ready to make our magazine.
Monday 3 May 2010
with theses examples and others ive seen i was able to understand how to attract my audience and the conventions revealed from these magazines and others i've seen do suggest that horror magazines are aimed at a more male target audience because of the colouring and typography e.g. each one of these magazines follow a a similar colour scheme which is red, the things in red are the things that are meant to draw your attention plus red has a relation to blood in comparison and the shade of red used for these magazines and it does resemble blood, but in general with the colour and tone they do portray very masculine features which will attract male audiences.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
RESEARCH- As a group we used www.allhorrortrailers.com to look at trailers and to see the varies convention, shots and aspects of horror that were shown within most of them. Then we discussed ideas and thought about how we can create our own horror convention (which lead to the creation of the 'URBAN HORROR') whilst strongly following Todorov's theory on equilibrium and dis-equilibrium to make a successful horror trailer. We used a video camera to record images that compare to ones we've seen within other horror trailers like 'Blair witch project' and 'Gothika'. using apple trailers to watch things like the Omen and then converting the avi into dv sections and using the sections to create our own horror trailer of the film, adding music and using editing conventions that i had learned. we then used I-movie to decide on what scenes and shots were good and also to play around and put things together in an attempt to meet horror conventions that will attract an audience also I-movie allowed us to use clever transitions that can smooth down each scene making it seem more authentic you can also add effects like adjusting the tones of certain frames to help with the conventions of horror e.g dark shady tones, red colourings that relate to blood and warning.
For my Magazine and poster I looked at many examples on google images where i was influenced from seeing some of these and understanding the conventions that i had to follow in order to attract my audience e.g. colour, central image and typography, renowned magazine like 'Fangoria' were strong influence simply because they usually follow the one main image rule I'm fond of. 'Photo-shop' was the software suitable for me to achieve in making substantial Ancillary texts to try and get the same layout and professional look that other world known magazines and posters have.
Here are some examples I've used as influence-
POSTERS-
MAGAZINES-
For all of my media products and my decision on choice of media technologies and how I used it was essential for portraying them in a authentic, realistic and attractive way for the audience to be subject to them. It was my aim to make sure i gained success through both of my ancillary texts. through research I've seen how its important to know how to attract an audience generally or specifically because with out an audience you cannot progress in this business so learning about the media conventions and horror aspects that had to include as helped me understand a lot more about marketing in general and how i can target audiences more effectively.
PLANNING- we agreed on the story line and made a story-board which we stuck by. Using digital video cameras, we filmed shots that would compliment a horror genre meaning we experimented with lighting, darkness, angles, shadows, breakage of light through trees etc and we experimented with different styles of shots, for e.g close ups, mid-shots, long shots, panning shots, fixed shots and different angles and levels to show mobility and levels. Planning allowed us to have a better understanding of what we could achieve through what we were doing and we can decide exactly how we wanted to address are target audience for a horror. Todorov's theory of equilibrium and disequilibrium spurred us to make a trailer that slightly follows his ideas because most the trailers we saw used this theory and it engaged us so we thought it'll be a good idea.
we used 'Photoshop' to make our poster and magazine front cover. we used varies different layouts and colours schemes that we experimented with, and many effects and transitions were used on each image, we had a general idea for our poster and magazine because we were strongly influenced by the images above and what they all have in common is that they all of them only have one image that delivers the convention of horror (other that the typography) i believe this works better then having many things happening at once because the one image in my ancillary texts all reveal aspects of horror, like the poster portraying 'me' screaming and the magazine showing anarchy and distress these both fall within the category of a horror convention. in addition we all knew that the majority of horror magazines and posters tend to be dark and Erie and usually the main image suggest some sort of evil, so that knowledge became useful when making these texts by abiding by those conventions and using the effects within 'photoshop' to experiment with different ideas which helped me understand what worked and what didn't thus making me understand what can attract an audience and what cant.
EVALUATION-we placed our trailer on youtube to know whether we succeeded in attracting and engaging our audiences by getting many people to watch and comment so we can record the feedback and know if are trailer was a success or not. We also conducted a screening were we invited many people within out sixth form to view all of our media products and made questionaires that ask the participants whether they liked the trailer, poster and magazine and having the choice to each one out of 10. our feedback was predominately very positive with everyone liking each part of my media products, this was good news because within the screening we made sure we had a diversity and contrast of age range which was between 16 up to 50 because teachers were invited too, our trailer was aimed at 15-30 year olds but every one liked it meaning we succeeded in engaging the audience and we met out target audience.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/combination%20of%20products.mp3?a=x5GI9Z2eb1Y
My most challenging and impressive break from convention is within my products because of the fact that I've mixed the "Urban" genre with "horror". I can relate to the chosen track of my trailer because It appeals to the urban music fan as Gigs is one of the biggest grime rappers in South London and because he is huge on the underground scene, it gives the film credibility with grime fans ive used the name of the song (DONT GO THERE) as a transition text on my trailer and also as a slogan on my poster linking the two and making them effective in terms of targeting my audience. even having the same title in the exact same font and size makes the effect better due to easier relation of the Three texts the Title is the font 'cracked' we used this to show the audience that the victims within the trailer are 'Breaking' down and also to portray that their worlds are 'cracking' up around them doing this on all the texts allows the audience to address all texts at the same time. i believe that the combination of our main product and my ancillary texts have been both effective and successful because they all have a relationship that suggest the genre and target audience. Each of my media texts are linked, In both the poster and magazine cover I have used screenshots from rushes of our main product. Along with photos of characters in their roles where people can easily relate each text together. This is effective because as an audience, the ancillary texts offer more advertisement, as well as the trailer. Unlike the trailer, and even the poster, a magazine can be re-used,seen multiple times, passed through other members of the family and friends. The magazine also offers more information on the film, for example spoilers coming up, interviews, or simply pictures of their starring characters. In the society we live in, when we like a media product we tend to want to know all there is about it including the stories, characters and actors involved. For example my magazine cover advertises an exclusive interview with one of the characters, and with the main image being chosen from the trailer, its instantly relate the two texts making the even more effective.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/audience%20feedback.mp3?a=2CtxiGreYAc
- catfordboi this is brilliant! im actually happy i know you lot! well done!
- mylinkysmoks jokes, dere shud be a proper film bout mansfield, not some camera crew with pigs on peoples day GREAT WORK.
- AdreynCashArtist Well done, it reminds me of 'paranormal activity'. I like these types of films as the horror i felt after the movie is over, its way more effective.
How do you attract/address your audience?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/addressing%20audience.mp3?a=irADR31pRdk
My target audience was created rather than aimed for, either way i achieved on attracting my audience by having certain conventions that allow them to be subject to influence e.g. race, the majority of my trailer is made up of Black cast this can lead to a majority of black audiences because social groups tend to follow there own kind for varies different reason like; culture and preferences. I aimed for a age range between 15-30 i believe I've achieved this by making the characters within the trailer 'students' that have just finished college and are heading to university and knowing that most university students graduate around the age of 22-24 i believe these ages will be able to relate to the style of which the students are portrayed e.g. having a night out/ having fun. The setting of all this is within a park in a urban town so urban people may also be attracted to this simply because they can relate to urban life and lifestyles. Posters aren't usually bought but seen so my strategic selling point would be to place them around fast food shops, around schools, colleges, universities, generally places where students will be able to see them easily and often so the more they see it the more they get influenced and the more they might want to watch it. My magazine is low priced so this can appeal to a lower social economic barrier, my main target audience is full time students many of them don't have a jobs so the price can be easier on them to acquire.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/target%20audience.mp3?a=PTiMfbgyAwY
As I've explained before i believe i have diverse outlook within my media product, the general horror conventions immixed with the cast predominately being black makes a convergence of media that has been created which I've called 'Urban Horror'. I've called it this because Urban means 'Characteristic of the city or city life' and the setting is within a park in the city. A target audience is defined primarily by gender and age range, Additional elements include socioeconomic status, rural or urban, race, family status, theatre goers or not, and special interests, These interests can include anything from political learning's to religion or the particular subject matter of the film. The age certificate is 15 so my age range for target audience will be young adults ranging between 15 to 30 the plot revolves around students in an urban city so the socio-economic status will be lower class. To be successful in this business its best to appeal to many different audiences horrors usually targets white middle-class/young people which are often men, but my inclusion of Rap music does tend to relate to black working-class young people this boardens my target audience. my decision to have a young black cast from the city allows urban audiences to relate with the characters. With a mostly Black cast its hard to depict whether something is labelled a "Black film" but with my addition of a white male and female i believe i've opened up my target audience for them to see my trailer as a "Urban film" so in general the inclusion of a female in the cast allows the target audience to include young women too. The inclusion of a white male in the trailer is an attempt to appeal to the white youths too, the convergence of these two types of media has never blossomed before so it seems im marketing a new genre of media that could appeal to most.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/distribution.mp3?a=zqIzOtQAImE
Well considering having a film trailer, film poster and film magazine, i believe my media products would be distributed by a film company and going by my style of media a british film company like vertigo. Trailers are used to advertise, film trailers are considered to be one of the most important marketing strategies for the film. Having a distribution deal with a company like "Vertigo" films who are famous for their British horror "Severence" and their British gangster film "The Business". This company has proven success for independent low budget niche or cult films. This would suit the niche target audience of our low budget project. A smaller company would be focussing all its publicity on one project. This may prove more successful than a huge company which needs to promote other films at the same time thus neglecting and not spending enough time on it, their priorities may end up being Hollywood blockbusters rather than an independent British Film. Basically trailers are considered to be the short film advertisement of new films. It gives hints about the story line, casting stars and the location of the movie, it can also gives you an incentive to watch this film by showing ratings from others that can help the marketing e.g. '5* best horror of 2010'.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/representing%20social%20groups.mp3?a=JjWdbILCmgg
The clear things denoted from my trailer is that the cast is predominately Black, doing this has already made a diverse genre and this most probably will/has decided my chosen audience, which is multi-ethnicity. The fact that my cast is mostly black and the genre is horror it slightly makes a convergence of media which I've decided to call an 'urban horror' simply because i haven't ever seen a horror with a predominately black cast or its very rare/ not highly rated i added a scene with a white male just so i can appeal to white youth as well so you could say its 'tokenism' for view but its simply a strategy to get more diversity within my trailer. my audience would most probably appeal to young adults aged 15 to 30 my films age certificate is 15 so this will support my theory. The gender of my audience will most probably be male because of the amount of male characters I've portrayed within my trailer plus my poster and magazine are quite masculine with dark colours and tones and writing that all suggest that it appeals to males. I deliberately included a female in the car to add a female dimension to the film and expand the target audience, i thought if i didn't it would be predominately male (as horror films are primarily enjoyed by young males).
in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
http://www.humyo.com/10347999/forms%20and%20conventions.mp3?a=i_WvuaPmGQM
My most challenging and impressive break from convention is the fact that I have mixed the "Urban" genre with "horror". Previous British films featuring "Urban" culture and young black protagonists have all been gritty gangster films (eg Adulthood, Kidulthood, Bullet Boy, Harry Brown). Tis film aims to target the same audience and the horror audience for a new genre crossover - "Urban horror". From the very beginning my aim was to challenge 'typical' horror conventions within my trailer by straying away from having Villains that maybe masked or their identity might be concealed. My aim was to achieve horror intrinsically meaning i wanted the horror to come within the individuals that are alien to their surroundings, so its as if there is a entity that is causing anarchy within the students. My idea of using hand held cameras was simply to make everything seem more realistic for the audience to relate to, the realism of it also creates more suspense because your looking at what only the camera man can see whilst watching meaning your perception is their perception. The hand-held effect was necessary because the budget dictated it I had no access to tracking, or steadycams therefore like other low budget horrors ("Paranormal Activity" and "Blair Witch Project"), the handheld style suited the gritty realism of the urban-horror crossover.
A real media product like 'The Blair Witch Project' was strong influence toward my decisions in this trailer especially the fact that they were students. so I used and developed this idea because students (e.g. the young) are more emotionally tied to the audience because of there age, people may be more empathic toward them so having a cast of students can help the effect of horror in its entirety.

day 4 of poster making- my poster is finished and this is what it looks like (below), Ive stuck to the conventions of a horror poster by using the main image to attract my audience, darker and bland colour schemes and odd text which is suitable for a horror poster. The B-movie style logo is a conventional horror style,The horror style typography which suggests blood dripping, The pentagram star is a conventional horror symbol which suggests the occult or paganism, evil in general. The scream represents horror, danger and caution, The Black and white photo represents realism and the shadowy darkness of a horror filmThe tag line "don't go there" matches the soundtrack by Gigs (who is a famous urban rap artist) and the tagline used in the trailer. my billing block was also done whilst doing this to make it look more authetic, I've also placed this at the end of my trailer to complete it.
obvious things will need to done like adding the title but most importantly ill need to add the slogans which will be 'don't go there' which goes with the song in the trailer and references to the fact that these students are somewhere their not meant to be. then add ratings from renowned news and film critics so the audience get an opinion on if they should watch the film, having 4-5 stars being shown usually guarantees sales plus having a little caption saying something like 'EXPLOSIVE HORROR' or 'BEST HORROR OF 2010' also adds to this effect.
Tuesday 20 April 2010
These images were taken from shots from my trailer these are the few that looked quite eligble to be on my poster. The thing they all have in common is that all these pics comply to a concept of horror with one main image that will stand out and portray a convention of horror in this case the shock factor, or the result of a shock factor e.g. the face in the red is the shock factor because its meant to show terror and abnormality, the face below in black and white is the result of the shock factor portraying an aspect of horror which has not been seen yet which can add the mystery that most horrors do include throughout their plots.
Saturday 17 April 2010
ive been tipped for a A grade so far for my trailer but that depends on what my trailer and magazine look like but still, im very happy about that!
a member of my group doesnt seem to be around enough so the two of us proceeded with the poster. to be very im not very talented when it comes how to the software provided to us to make the poster (photoshop) i had a vague idea but i knew nothing that could get the best out of a poster, so i asked for some assistances from a member of the opposite team (because it seems the rivalry is over) he is very good at making posters etc so he showed me how to work the software and gave me advice and i was able to proceed with making my poster, i took may pictures of things like woodlands and anything i could find that looked scary (my phone has a good mega-pixel which was very convinient) then i took a picture of a 'bloody hand' i had a volunteer to put red ink over his hand and smear it against a window.Posters need a picture which represents terror or horror conventions so I tried out a few examples of horror style photos. Many horror posters have a centre image which is always the focus of attention i aim to make my poster like these posters i have around my text, with the research i did all horrors posters need a aspect of terror so it gives off the right impression toward the genre. all the horror trailers ive seen have a slogon that suggest a subliminal horror e.g. 'you will never make it out alive' or it refers to something sinsiter. the lighting as you can see is very dull and the very aura of the posters is shear sinsiter so these posters have achieved in revealing there genre with simply a main image and sinister looking write.
the music i used did take me time to really decide on whether to use it but it was the lyrics that persuaded me to use this particular song 'Gigs Feat B.O.B-Dont go there'. this song was was meant for the cresendo part and it comes in just as the heartbeat reaches its peak and the frightening shot of the corrupt student is shown then it'll play straight toward the end of the trailer. my reasons for using this song is simply because at a certain point it repeats 'dont go there' a few times and i thought it'll be clever to actually put that there in text as well to converge the lyrics with the plot and the fact that the students shouldnt be there. usually after every cresendo in a horror trailer the pace slows down again so you have that up and down effect, at the end of my cresendo i have an moving image of a 'deranged student' who is making demonic sounds then to break away from the cresendo i've thrown in '5* Best film of 2010' then i decided to add a few more slower scenes to break up the pace along with music even one in slow motion then after that the text of 'Dont go there...' comes in as the music is saying those lyrics too I was very pleased with the effect of the chosen track. It appeals to the urban music fans as Gigs is one of the biggest grime rappers in South London and because he is huge on the underground scene, it gives the film credibility with grime fans. The slow motion scene i spoke about is now reanimated and (the music is faded out) with dialogue where im acting and saying how im terrified etc as i continue i get grabbed into the darkness which is another part of terror in my trailer, straight after that ive placed the title of the film the music is brought back up and ive but the 'coming soon'. all together the trailer is look brilliant as said by my teacher i just need to add my billing block which can be done as im doing my poster killing two birds with one stone.
Wednesday 14 April 2010
the first part of the equililbrium was easy to finish because its slow and the camera is fixated on one person, i decided to break up the interview scene with transitions coming after each question is answered this was simply to smoove things down, i added music behind this scene, slow horror, emotional music to set the scene this is good because Karl did well to make a sense of distress and discomfort in the way he was speaking through out the interview and i added text which immixed through the scene saying 'the only surivivor' which adds to why he would be in such discomfort and distress. after that scene i added more text saying 'Real footage of Mountsfield Massacre' just after karl says "just look at the video" then the next part of the equilibrium begins with me filming in the car messing around as students do when their going out, the scene gives the audience a part of the story they can relate to which is young people out having fun together. This allows them to empathise with the characters.i believe this scene adds to that effect im looking for because they all seem like they our having fun but we as the audience already know that the night will end in tragedy so with that effect in play i added more text saying 'A night to remember' which is subliminally refering to the horrors to come. then after the text its the scene where they are in the park just settling and then toward the end you see one of the students walking of in the dark and the heart beat after which goes in through the end of this scene straight through the build up to the cresendo.
for the cresendo part i added 2 clips of me zooming up on surrealist pictures in my friends house, with them naturally being scary all i did was darken the frames and add a demonic yell as its zooming in, those come directly after the scary jumpy bit and right before the running scenes all together it looks really good and it all compliments each other.
i do believe my group could have contributed more toward the editting but i trust them with the magazine and the poster.
being backward as always :-s i started editting the cresendo scenes first because that seemed alot more fun and i'd have alot more to mess around with trying hard to make it as weird, fast and scary as possible... i experimented with different colour tones, sounds, transitions and i came up with something that looked really good but it does seem that i dont have enough things to fill the cresendo part of the trailer, my idea was to have something that makes people jump instantly as soon as the cresendo starts and i tested this on a friend with the volume high and the screen wide and HIS reaction was a scream! so i believe i succeeded in the fear factor of my trailer. afterward i put in the running scenes with transitions to make them move smoothing from scene to scene and its looking really good also i experimented with the tempo of the frames so i can make them faster in scenes as the cresendo picks up, but as i thought before i dont have enough scenes for this... ill have to do more filming.
the only problem i face now is that my filming will not go onto 'final cut pro' only 'Imovie' sir did try many times he even brought in a professional to help but there was no luck so for the mean while i'd have to edit on Imovie which is alot easier anyway. I will do most basic editing on Imovie and then try export it as a movie to final cut for the trickier edits later...
equilibrium sectionThe DV tape was corrupted in some way
and a possibly name for the trailer could be MOUNTSFIELD MASSACRE because he does have quite a ring to it. (^_^) the image below is how we would have our title. Mountsfield massacre - the alliteration of the two Ms makes it memorable and Massacre is clearly a genre specific word. It immediately makes the genre clear - horror. The cracked font suggests breaking, and this suggests horror as the character's world is going to crack. The "wobbly" style looks like an old fashioned B-movie horror again making the genre clear to target audience, hopefully attracting them to the film.
Monday 12 April 2010
the horror aspects and cresendo scenes which means the filming in the park is almost done and the film in the house is almost done its just the scenes that make up the equilibrium that needs to be done then edit!
Sunday 11 April 2010
-We discussed the genre we were going to work with and how we will approach it (horror)
-We discussed what conventions we were intending to use and which we were going to subvert,
-We Discussed the main characters and the way we are going to fit Todorov's narrative theory to our trailer e.g
opening equilibrium: beginning, setting the scenes and plot.
disruption to equilibrium: crescendo, images of horror conventions etc.
Attempt to repair the disruption: maybe a glimpse of hope.

Tuesday 23 March 2010
My genre will be horror for my media brief. I’ve researched many different horror trailers on www.allhorrortrailers.com and what I found was that it never gives away the ‘horror’ at first, it slowly introduces horror with typical horror aspects like the weather (stormy) and time of day (night time). Horror is revealed through written messages that come up throughout the trailer e.g. in 'gothika' it shows Halle Berry in what is a usual day going to work (which is working in a psychiatric prison') the weather is typical of a horror which is heavy rain, night time and thunder and lighting. It shows her talking to patients but whilst this happens Erie music is heard and the screen blacks out revealing a message of relevance to the story line (which is horror) e.g. 'Dr. Miranda Grey is and expert' which shows her profession and the word 'expert' reveals that she may be renowned or looked up to by others, the messages start to change as the trailer progresses saying things like 'until she was on the other side' which is in complete contrast to the first message adding to the suspense making us as the audience expecting and wanting more. The trailer starts to reveal scary aspects of the film which starts to grip the audience, Gothika, hostel, saw and many other horror films trailers use this technique. I believe ill use this same method for my trailer. The conventions used were all similar and all the trailers i saw all coincidentally followed the Todorov's narrative theory which is equilibrium, disruption and attempt to repair disruption seeing and knowing exactly how this theory works i believe i'll utilise it for my trailer.
